Frequently Asked Questions

Will this plan help if I only sell services?

Yes—we assess readiness for companies selling tangible goods, intangible goods (digital products), and services.

Does it matter where my company is legally registered?

Not really. I have a range of experience working with firms registered in Canada, the USA, Europe, Australia, Japan, and Southeast Asia. If we run into unexpected strangeness related to the host country of your legal entity during the course of the project, we’ll work it out together.

I have a small team. What if we need help executing the plan?

Implementation and execution is an optional add-on that can be discussed in the plan review call. Pricing varies widely, and is based on your capabilities and needs. I never recommend actions unless I believe that they’re in the best interest of your business.

Do I need to sell in Europe already for this to work for my business?

Nope! This service is designed for companies that don’t currently trade in Europe, but are interested in doing so.

Where do you store the data submitted, and who has access to it?

After submitting the intake profile, the data is stored in Montréal, Quebec, Canada and then processed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Only staff employed by Six Catalysts have access to this data, and it is permanently deleted from our servers at the conclusion of the project. A copy of of the intake profile is emailed to your team automatically upon submission, for your own records.

What if we get stuck preparing the intake profile?

Preparing the intake profile can be daunting, but it’s meant to a best-effort basis. Tell me what you know, and don’t stress about what you don’t know. Plus, you can book two 30-minute calls during the process for 1:1 support.

What if I want to expand to multiple markets? Can I get a discount?

Absolutely. Each market entry plan is still bespoke, so there is incremental work for us in a multi-market plan. But, we’re pleased to offer you a 10% discount on 2-3 market areas and a 20% discount on 4 or more. You can indicate this during the checkout process.

Why is this a flat fee? Aren’t you a consultant? Consultants charge by the hour.

Charging by the hour creates poorly-aligned incentives. When you charge by the hour, you create the incentive to build demand for more hours—which I call “milking clients”. I simply have different values, and I want to help as many firms as I can diversify their book of business. This process is meant to be straightforward, no fuss, and one which leaves you with clarity. I’m not here to sell you on things you don’t need, I’m here to help you with the things that you do.

7 – 10 working days seems like a short turnaround for a capabilities grading and go-to-market plan. How do you accomplish this?

Most go-to-market consulting timelines are quite long, in order to incorporate a series of exploratory meetings and calls with stakeholders while quietly identifying sales opportunities for afterwork. If you’ve ever tried to schedule a meeting with three or four senior leaders or key stakeholders in your organization, you know how challenging it can be to do so with immediacy and urgency. That’s a big driver behind why consultant-led go-to-market planning takes so long.

My process significantly streamlines gathering the business and capabilities data necessary to synthesize a go-to-market plan efficiently, and effectively. No endless meetings, no “courtesy” calls without real agendas, no drawn out back-and-forth conversations over email or messaging apps. No navel-gazing (at least, with you in the room—I do quite a bit of thinking and pondering in isolation while preparing your plan).

This is a key reason why I only book four of these in any given month. I don’t juggle commitments or business development. After an intake profile is submitted, it’s all that I work on or think about until it’s finished and delivered. That continuity creates significant efficiencies and is highly productive.

Plus, I’ve been designing go-to-market efforts for a decade. I know what I’m doing.

Why should we consider trading in the EU at all? Wouldn’t we be better off just doing what we’re doing now?

There’s an old saying that’s relevant, especially now—”don’t put all of your eggs in one basket.” If you drop that basket, all of the eggs break. Trade is the same, though the risk can also come from changing rules and market conditions inside a single country. Though trade with the EU is governed by common rules across the bloc, there are 27 countries and sovereign governments which need to agree to substantial changes. This means that the EU has a high probability of remaining a consistent, rules-based trading partner as forcing change that contradicts the common good is difficult. Diffusion of power reduces the risk of extremes coming in like a wrecking ball and upending their system.

How long does it take to implement, and become trade-ready?

It depends on your business, core capabilities of the team, what you sell, and where you’ll be selling it. Smaller, nimble teams with focus and determination can be ready to sell in the EU in 4-6 weeks. More complex businesses or stringently regulated categories like pharmaceuticals and medical devices that are subject to approvals take significantly longer.

When we provide our email address, will we be added to a marketing list?

Not unless you want to be, and you explicitly sign up. We also do not sell, trade, or give away your contact information to any party unless we’re legally obligated to. Ever.

You will be offered a free one-year premium subscription to The Journey after project completion to provide support and learning resources for your international expansion, but you’ll need to explicitly claim the offer =)

What if we need to cancel the project? What’s your refund policy?

Things happen, conditions change. I get that. You’re welcome to a refund (less credit card processing fees) before substantive work on your plan begins. This is usually about a day after you submit the Intake Profile. If a referral partner has already been paid a commission, I’m afraid that this part of the fee is non-refundable (this happens 7 days after you submit payment). You can contact me here to request cancellation.

Where are you based?

Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Eastern Time, UTC-4 / UTC-5).

If I were sitting on a grocery store shelf, I’d have a Product of Canada sticker on my forehead.

We have some questions before committing. Can we book a call?

Sure can. Book a time here.
